Sukkermap

Map navigation website

Co-developer — shared the frontend and the interactive map work

The Sukkermap interactive school map interface

What it does

Sukkermap is a browser-based navigation tool for a Danish gymnasium (upper-secondary school). New students arrive to a building of numbered rooms across several floors and no obvious way to work out where anything is; Sukkermap lets them look a room up and see where it is.

The map itself is drawn and made interactive with p5.js, with the rest of the site built from plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript — no framework, which kept it small and easy to open on a phone between lessons.

Why I built it

Finding a specific classroom in an unfamiliar multi-floor building is a genuinely annoying problem for new students, and the school had nothing better than printed floor plans on the walls.

What I built

  • Co-developed the site and the interactive map rendering with p5.js
  • Built the room lookup so a student can search for a room and have it highlighted on the map
  • Worked on the layout and responsive behaviour so the map is usable on a phone

Technical challenges

  • Rendering a multi-floor building on a canvas and keeping it legible at phone size, where a floor plan that works on a monitor becomes unreadable.
  • Making a canvas-based map feel navigable — pan, zoom and selection have to be implemented rather than inherited from the browser.
  • Translating real floor plans into coordinate data accurate enough to trust.

Results

  • A working, publicly hosted map that students can use to locate rooms in the school
  • Delivered collaboratively with a second developer, split across the map rendering and the surrounding site
